1921 earth day poster

Celebrate and promote Earth Day (April 22) with kids by making posters from recycled newspapers and magazines.

Supplies

  • Old newspapers and magazines
  • Red, blue and green watercolors, craft paints or food coloring
  • 3 disposable cups
  • Water
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Flat paintbrush
  • Glue stick

Directions

  1. Cover work surface with newspapers to protect from paint stains.
  2. Cut out a large rectangle or square (from additional newspaper). Cut out another piece of newspaper in the same shape (but slightly larger) to place behind as a border.
  3. Cut out a big circle for the earth and use a pencil to draw simple outlines of the continents.
  4. Cut out additional shapes, such as hearts or hands, drawing them first with a pencil, if needed.
  5. Paint the larger poster piece, the earth and other shapes. If watercolors aren’t available, mix a few drops of craft paint or food coloring into each cup with a couple tablespoons of water to make thin paint.
  6. Set aside wet pieces to dry on more newspaper.
  7. Plan your Earth Day message and cut needed letters from magazines.
  8. When painted pieces are completely dry, use a glue stick to adhere everything together, adding the letters last.
  9. Make several posters to hang inside your home or on the front door to spread a positive Earth Day message!
