toast and egg

Despite the fact that we have a solid morning routine, sometimes we get sidetracked and don’t have time to eat breakfast at home. Eating breakfast in the car isn't ideal, but it’s better than skipping it altogether. I have perfected the art of grab-and-go breakfasts that will help fuel my daughter’s day. Here are some of our favorites:

Breakfast Sandwich
I make half a dozen breakfast sandwiches over the weekend, place each one in a plastic baggie and store them in the freezer. I start with toast, a bagel or an English muffin. I put cooked egg and sliced ham in the middle. With only a minute in the microwave, your child can have a hot breakfast even on the busiest mornings.

Dry Cereal and Nuts
You could also call this trail mix. We like Cheerios, almonds and raisins. Mix it up with whatever you have on hand. I have about a dozen individual bags or containers of mix ready to go at all times.

Yogurt and Granola Bar
The squeeze tubes are more convenient, but Greek yogurt has more protein. When I forget to grab a spoon, my daughter uses the granola bar as a utensil to eat the yogurt.

Smoothie
I give frozen banana chunks, yogurt, protein powder and juice a whirl in a portable blender mug. There are hundreds of smoothie variations you can make to your child’s liking. When there’s leftover smoothie, I pour it into a Popsicle mold and put it in the freezer for an afterschool snack.

Lunchmeat Sandwich
This is so easy! Throw your child's favorite lunchmeat, cheese and condiments on whole wheat bread. My daughter prefers honey ham and mustard or classic PB&J. Sandwiches can be frozen as well. Take one out of the freezer when you wake up and it will be thawed by the time you head out the door.

Peanut Butter and Banana Waffle
Toast a waffle or two. Spread with peanut butter. Put half a banana on each waffle. Your child can eat it with one hand (like a hot dog or taco).

More tips:
• Fill a cup with milk, juice or water for your child to sip in the car.
• Keep napkins and wet wipes in the car to clean up drips, crumbs or spills.
• Set your child’s grab-and-go breakfast next to your keys so it’s not left behind!
