A mother supports her hearing impaired child as they explore together at a cozy workspace.

Every August, I tell myself the same thing: This will be the year we stay organized. Our days will have a smoother rhythm and I'll stay on top of all our family’s moving pieces: school, sports practices, playgroups, household chores, appointments, activities, homework and keeping everyone fed. I recently realized I don’t have to remember everything myself. Artificial intelligence (AI) has become the extra set of hands—or maybe the extra brain—I didn't know I needed. Here is how our family uses AI (ChatGPT, Google Gemini, etc.) to organize, stay on task, learn and create.

AI: The Family Assistant I Always Wanted

Since it feels like I'm managing dozens of schedules at once, AI helps me create chore charts, build realistic morning and bedtime routines, and create packing lists for every outing. It gives me ideas for quick dinners on soccer nights, healthy lunches my kids will actually eat, and recipes that use ingredients already in my pantry. It even organizes my grocery list by store sections, saving both time and money.

When the house feels cluttered, I ask AI to break the project into small daily tasks. I treat it like a calendar and keep track of allergy appointments, practices, birthday parties and school holidays. I ask it to log my workouts, tell it to remind me of recycling days, and send it pictures of toys at Target that I’ll send to Santa when the holidays roll around.

The biggest gift AI has given our family is the mental space that comes from not feeling like I have to remember everything myself. With AI working for me, I spend less time stressing over logistics and more time doing what matters most—making memories with my kids.

AI as a Learning Companion

Since AI isn't going anywhere, it's our job as parents to teach children how to use it wisely—not just as a search engine, but as a tool for learning, creativity and critical thinking.

Gone are the days of telling kids to grab a dictionary when they have a question. AI doesn't just define a word or provide a quick answer—it explains. I can ask it to describe a black hole to my 6-year-old, compare it to something they already understand, and then keep the conversation going by answering the endless "why?" questions that naturally follow.

One question leads to another, and suddenly we're making connections between ideas instead of memorizing facts. We can ask for stories, analogies, memory tricks, rhymes or games that help concepts stick. Learning through AI becomes an interactive conversation that encourages understanding through curiosity. Every child learns differently, and AI gives us endless ways to explore the same idea until it finally clicks.

AI encourages critical thinking. Kids quickly learn that the better their questions are, the better their answers become. Instead of simply searching for information, they're learning how to think, refine their questions and explore new ideas.

Homework has become less stressful, too. If one of my kids is struggling with a subject, AI helps explain it in age-appropriate language. It can create practice geography quizzes, spelling games, or Toy Story-themed math problems that make learning fun.

Even beloved children's programs are reflecting this shift toward curiosity and exploration. When Elmo has a question on Sesame Street, he turns to his animated smartphone sidekick, Smartie, whose catchphrase is, "Look it up!" Rather than simply providing an answer, Smartie encourages Elmo to be curious and discover more. That's exactly how I hope my own kids will continue to use AI—not as a replacement for learning, but as a tool to ask better questions and discover new ideas.

AI Fuels Imagination

At my house, we create silly songs starring our dogs, write bedtime stories with our favorite dinosaurs, invent elaborate magnet tile creations and create scavenger hunts around the house. Sometimes we ask it to create a mystery for the kids to solve or a treasure hunt on a lazy afternoon. AI has become another way to spark creativity, not replace it. Here are more ideas for little imagineers:

  • Become an inventor: Describe a problem and ask AI to invent a gadget to solve it.
  • Create a comic book: Dream up superheroes, villains or talking animals and write your own comic adventure.
  • Write yourself into a story: Become the main character in a magical adventure.
  • Open an imaginary restaurant: Design a menu and invent silly foods to serve.
  • Travel anywhere: Visit the rainforest, the bottom of the ocean, or another planet by asking AI to be your tour guide.
  • Design a pet: Mix two or three animals together and invent its habitat, diet and special abilities.
  • Become a detective: Ask AI to create a mystery with clues to solve.
  • Make a treasure map: Hide "treasure" around the house and have AI write the clues for a parent or sibling to follow.
  • Make a family game show: Come up with trivia questions, silly challenges and prizes.
  • Create a family mascot: Design a funny family mascot complete with a name, costume and catchphrase.

Whether it's freeing up valuable mental space for busy parents, or encouraging curiosity and creativity in kids, AI can be a powerful tool for the whole family. When used thoughtfully, it provides more time for creating, connecting and making memories together.
