Here we have E.T. meets Cloverfield. Mix aspiring filmmaker kids with a misunderstood alien battling a heartless and repressive military in the late 1970’s and you have an odd blend that somehow works in this movie.
The movie opens with the funeral of Joe Lamb’s (Courtney) mother. She died in an accident in the steel plant in this small Ohio city. Joe is left with his dad, town Deputy Sheriff, who doesn’t know how to communicate with his son.
Joe’s best friend is an aspiring movie maker, creating a movie to enter in a film contest. With a small group of middle school or early high school boys and one pretty girl, Alice (Fanning), they set up to film a scene at the train station. There is a huge train wreck and the kids barely escape with their lives. Their movie camera films the wreck and captures pictures that reveal sinister doings are afoot.
The movie then splits into two stories, one about the secret behind the train wreck and the other a family drama about Joe’s dad and Alice’s dad. The stories paralleled well, keeping my interest as they seamlessly moved in and out of my attention. Gradually the stories moved closer and closer until they merged into one story.
The movie was well done, but there are family issues, a supporting character smokes pot and gets stoned, there is violence and some truly scary scenes. Yes, I did have an occasional question about something, but everything tied up well at the end. I liked Super 8; it is an entertaining mystery/thriller with great characters, especially the kids. There is violence, no sex, drug use, some bad language. It is best for kids 12 and up not prone to nightmares.
