Although I don’t ordinarily review “R” rated movies, I suspect that there are younger girls who are begging to see this movie and some “R” ratings are more “R” than others, for example, The King’s Speech which never should have been rated “R”. Bridesmaids earns the “R” rating.
Best way to sum this film up is The Hangover meets Mean Girls. The movie opens with Annie (Wiig) in bed with a narcissistic man who uses her. While there isn’t nudity, they show the couple in several different positions. The point of the scene is how badly he treats her and how unfulfilled and unhappy she is afterward. Then we see the bakery she started and lost. These scenes establish that Annie’s life is a mess. Enter Lillian, Annie’s best friend since childhood, who gets engaged. While happy for her, Annie is miserable because it makes her life seem shallow, empty and going nowhere.
Annie is selected as maid of honor and finds herself competing to throw the best shower and bachelorette parties with Lillian’s wealthy new friend. Enter the mean girl competition.
Many funny and outrageous events take place, some are gross, like the food poisoning scene at the bridal gown place, but others like the plane trip to Las Vegas when Annie gets high accidentally mixing a relaxant and alcohol, are truly hilarious.
What’s good about the movie was behind it all is the precious, threatened friendship between Lillian and Annie and the great new guy Annie meets. I like the messages to girls about not putting up with men like Mr. Narcissist and valuing those who care about you. However there is plenty of sexual talk and scenes, bad language and some bathroom humor. This is not a movie for kids, forget 10 and 11-year-olds. It might be okay to take a 14 or 15 year old, if she’s mature.
