(Running time: 120 Minutes) Rated PG-13
Starring Johnny Depp, Penélope Cruz, Ian McShane, Geoffrey Rush

Just when I was ready to give up on this series after two disappointing sequels, they bring back the original spark and a plot! This film has returned to the plot-driven Pirates movie, like the first one, we all fell in love with.

The plot is complicated. There are three groups seeking the fountain of youth, Blackbeard the Pirate (McShane), Captain Barbossa (Rush) on behalf of the British government and the Spaniards. Captain Jack Sparrow (Depp) is leading the bad guys, Blackbeard and his crew to the fountain. There were a couple of times when I lost track of the plot and I wasn’t sure how Jack Sparrow came to be in possession of the map to the fountain and the knowledge of how to get there. Frankly it didn’t matter because I caught up with what was happening a few steps later.

While this was a fun ride from start to finish, like the first movie, it didn’t rely so heavily on the slapstick pratfalls and silliness of sequels two and three. The plot had me hanging on every word and the special effects made the movie come alive even though I didn’t see it in 3-D.

I’m sorry to say there were some very scary mermaids here, which keeps this from being a good movie for younger children. While there is no sex, there are a few sexual jokes, but far fewer than in the first version. There is no bad language but plenty of violence and some blood. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides should be best for kids 11 and up or 10 year olds not prone to nightmares. This is a good time; go see it with your kids.
