Congratulations to Steven Meineke for winning another gold medal! Steve’s regular column, Family Album, won a gold medal award in the Editorial category from Parenting Publications of America, which recognizes excellence in journalism, photography and design.

Parenting Publications of Amercia (PPA), recently lauded the “best of the best” out of 1,184 entries from parenting magazines and newspapers in the United States, Canada and Australia at the Editorial and Design Awards Competition held in Nashville. This annual event recognizes excellence in journalism, photography and design. Competing against parenting publications with circulations of 55,000 or more, San Diego Family Magazine proudly garnered three awards this year.
Eileen Cornish, a freelance writer, received a Gold Award in the Column: Reviews category for her outstanding literary reviews in Off the Shelf (June & November 2006). “Those themes (Father’s Day, Single Parents, Step-Families) are relevant to the audience. The writing eschews frills in favor of clarity.”
The monthly column, Family Album was honored in the Family Matters category. The inspiring pieces, “In Appreciation of Fathers” and “When Winning is Losing” (June & August 2006) won Steven Meineke a Gold award. The judges wrote: “These pieces each stand above the competition in terms of emotional depth and reach. Using wonderful language and compelling stories to full advantage, they attract the reader and never let go.”

“Use of photography can make or break a section, and in this case it makes the section,” remarked the judges about Home Life & Gardening (March 2006). Art director Susan Bergeson took home a Bronze Award for outstanding design in the area of Special Sections. Also named on the award: Claire Yezbak Fadden, editor; Rik Thiesfeld, advertising design. The judges further commented: “The section showcases photos well by giving the best pictures plenty of size. Technical detail to cutouts and illustrations are also well done. Eye-catching pull quotes help capture readers’ attention to get them into stories.”
