Fencing Teaches More than Swordplay
“At LionHeart we understand that the person behind the mask is more important than the score at the end of a bout,” says Fencing Master Stuart Lee. “The tenants of chivalry are taught through every age level and sportsmanship is a key component of the culture of our club,” says Lee. Maestro Lee is certified by the British Academy of Fencing and the United States Fencing Coaches Association. He is a Pacific Coast Championship team member, a former Division Champion and he coached the UCSD NCAA Men’s and Women’s teams from 1997-2004. The Academy offers classes for all ages, private lessons, camps and fencing demonstrations and birthday parties. It has state-of-the-art overhead scoring equipment on a floating wood floor. Current customers who bring in a friend who enrolls in a class receive a free t-shirt.

Volunteer for Red Shoe Day! Help Support Families with Hospitalized Children
The second annual Red Shoe Day fundraiser for Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego happens Sept. 28; the local charity needs 1,000 volunteers to participate at roadside locations throughout San Diego County. Volunteers will be stationed at stoplights and intersections holding Ronald McDonald’s iconic, size 14 red shoes and collecting donations to help RMHCSD provide services—including lodging, meals and emotional support—to the families of critically ill or injured children being treated at area hospitals.
Street Team volunteers can create personal fundraising pages. To set up your page or register yourself or a group as a Street Team participant, visit RMHCSD.org/RedShoeDay. If you’re not able to volunteer, contribute via the Red Shoe Day text-to-donate campaign. Text REDSHOE to 20222 to make a $5 donation and help the Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego offer overnight accommodations and daytime services to the families of hospitalized children.
Stop by McDonald’s for SeaWorld savings! From Sept. 13-Oct. 10, families can visit San Diego County McDonald’s restaurants to pick up an exclusive discount coupon. Adults get in for the kids’ price and kids get in free! For each coupon redeemed, SeaWorld will donate $2 to RMHCSD.

Thirty Years of Quality Montessori Education
Celebrating 30 years of serving children and families, Oak Knoll Montessori will host special events this fall to mark this significant anniversary. Executive Director Candice Young shares an observation made by a parent: “Oak Knoll Montessori is the school with a heart.”
Young says, “Early childhood education provides the foundation for future success and the Montessori method encourages children to enjoy while they are learning. Materials are designed to be hands-on, to captivate each child’s interest, and promote independence and self-motivation. The curriculum allows children to progress individually to advanced levels and to develop a lifelong love of learning.” The school offers educational, multicultural, Montessori curriculum for potty-trained children ages 2 years through first grade.
The highly educated staff members have been with the school from 10 to 20 years or more. They provide individual attention for each child, with a student/teacher ratio of 8:1. Enrichment activities include gymnastics, KinderDance, piano, yoga, music, art, science and gardening. Visit the open house on September 6 from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m, and parent orientation from 4 - 6 p.m.

Over a Century of Help for Local Children in Need
“The San Diego Center for Children helps children thrive whose trauma, abuse or mental health challenges have delayed their ability to succeed,” explains Alison Beck, director of development and communications for the Center. “The Center provides a variety of mental health and academic services for these children, including day treatment, outpatient counseling, a K-12 grade education in our accredited school, a residential treatment program and therapeutic services provided to foster family agencies.”
This is the oldest nonprofit serving children in San Diego, marking their 125th year in 2012. They assist more than 500 children each year.
“We are helping some of San Diego’s most vulnerable children who have had a very tough life so far and need exceptional care and attention,” Beck says. “We aim to not only [support] these children with the services that they so desperately need, but we strive to also provide them a fun childhood that we would want for our own kids.”
“We are very excited about our Walk for Kids on Saturday, November 5 at Crown Point, Mission Bay. We are gladly recruiting sponsors and walk teams,” Beck continues. “The funds we raise from this walk help support some of the Center’s programs and services.”
