Popular Swim School Opens New Site in Carlsbad
“Noonan Family Swim School is not just a place for swim lessons, but it is a school—our classroom is just in the water,” explains Monica Noonan. “We are a year-round, family owned and operated school where we teach to the individual child.”
Monica and husband Jeff combined their backgrounds in aquatics and business to establish the school in 2004, and have since grown to four locations: Del Mar, Rancho Bernardo/4S Ranch, Linda Vista and Murrieta/Temecula. This fall, they’ll open a fifth location in Carlsbad. Their unique program features lessons for all ages, from infants as young as 3 months old to adults, water aerobics and an intramural swim team.
“Teaching children to swim at an early age builds confidence, self-esteem and increases motor skill development. This early exposure will help them to be more successful throughout their lives,” says Noonan. “We constantly strive to enhance our programs and customer service so that [your children] will make swimming part of a healthy lifestyle,” Noonan continues. “Whatever your goal, swimming competitively, to relieve stress or to stay fit, we hope that you enjoy the sport for a lifetime.”

Yoga Practice Designed with Kids in Mind
“Tayo Kids Yoga classes for children blend traditional yoga postures, with music, movement and a serious amount of fun to nurture happy, healthy bodies and minds,” says Denise Rhodes, director. “Yoga helps children develop better body awareness, self-control, flexibility and coordination, and they carry these skills beyond the class into their daily routines.”
Rhodes became a certified instructor in 1994, and has taught for a variety of clients, including corporations and mommy and me groups. Her program at Tayo is designed to be active, creative, grounding, healthy and relaxing for children.
“Our goal is to teach from love and the kids feel this unconditional loving place and they thrive in it,” she says. “Kids are allowed to be free of any competition in yoga and free to be silly and expressive while learning how to focus. This makes for happy, peaceful kids with strong bodies and minds,”
“We envision the healing benefits of yoga being accessible to as many people as possible early in life by bringing the Tayo Kids Yoga Program to local schools and communities,” Rhodes says. Tayo also offers special programs for birthday parties and scouting events.

Plenty for Kids to Do, Touch and Explore at Air & Space Museum
“Science, space and aviation history all unfold at the San Diego Air & Space Museum, California’s official air and space museum,” says Jessica Packard, marketing and communications director.
An affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, the museum hosts a collection of historic, international air and space craft, including the Apollo 9 Command Module, the only real GPS satellite on display today, and a working replica of Lindbergh’s record-setting “Spirit of St. Louis.”
The museum offers interactive exhibits including MaxFlight and Space Shuttle simulators plus dynamic, hands-on traveling exhibitions and a 3D/4D theater. The new Kids’ Aviation Action Hanger features the “U-Fly-It” machine flight simulator, space suits for romping on a moon-like surface, an F-104 Starfighter cockpit mock-up, pedal planes, magnetic toys and aviation coloring books.
The exhibition “Space: A Journey to our Future and Dare to Dream!” offers interactive experiences like touchable space rocks, the chance to build a space rocket and a future Lunar Base Camp.

Buy, Sell and Recycle at La Mesa Shop
Back-to-school shopping is easy and affordable at Cory’s Closet, a children’s resale store that buys and sells gently used clothing, baby equipment, books, furniture, DVDs, toys and more.
Store-owner Jodi Valdez is a mother of three, so she truly understands what customers want for their children. “They grow quickly and are involved in many activities, which means we are constantly buying things to meet their needs. I am involved in all of my kids’ schools, sports and classes and so I see what it takes to run a family in this community and what items we need for our babies to teenagers,” she explains.
Cory’s Closet has a reputation for carrying a large inventory of name brands and they also maintain a wish list for customers seeking specific items.
“After 17 years of business we have met so many wonderful families and watched them grow. We have become such a destination place for many young families and also grandparents,” Valdez says. “We carry extra racks full of great back-to-school clothes for your children. We also buy and sell Halloween costumes. We have a great selection that fills the racks up after Labor Day.”
