Website Helps Families Save Time and Money
Daughter Sarah’s premature birth and her subsequent allergy to disposable diapers inspired Linda Byerline to create Happy Heinys. Using her background as a nurse, she developed a line of reusable cloth diapers. Byerline and her husband manufacture the products and sell them in their adjacent natural parenting store, Baby Frenzy. “All of our products are made in the USA, in our own facility, with USA-acquired materials,” she says. Baby Frenzy carries hard-to-find items from Nose Frieda, Ergo, Beco, Baby Legs, Hygeia, Simple Wishes, Belly Bandit, Inspired by Finn Amber necklaces and more.
“We decided to give local parents an easy way to find many of the products we were unable to locally find ourselves, as well as a safe place to ‘hang out’ with their children and other mom friends,” she says. “We also have a great play area so moms can browse without too much disruption and our Parents Room is perfect for get-togethers and meetings.”

Solutions for Children’s Different Learning Needs
Since 1996, Banyan Tree Learning Center and Foundations Academy has helped families overcome the pain and frustration that can accompany learning problems and academic failure. “Whether a child is ‘just a little behind’ or in need of a very different learning environment, we can help,” says founder Nanci Engle. “We work to discover the reason for learning problems and then correct them.”
Cognitive training helps with dyslexia, language delays, attention deficit, auditory processing, memory, sensory integration and nonverbal learning disabilities. Academic support programs improve reading, comprehension, spelling, written language, math, study skills and more. Test preparation and tutoring is offered for students from first grade through high school.
“The BT Learning Center is for students who want to attend before or after school. BT Foundations Academy is for students who wish to enroll in our private school, with home school or day school options,” Engle says. “Together, we design the right program for each child.” They are hosting an informational open house at each of their three centers on July 22: Solana Beach 10 a.m.–12 p.m., Point Loma and Scripps/Mira Mesa 1–4 p.m.

Speech Therapy Helps Families Communicate
“Parents get a lot of confusing and conflicting information about language development, and it is hard to sift through everything and know what to do when you have concerns about your child’s speech and language,” says Jen Traina, director of SmallTalk Speech Therapy. “We’re here to help parents and kids—and we love doing so.”
“We work with children from about 15 months old to 18 years,” she says. Traina started the business 11 years ago when her first child was born. Since then she has had three more children, and has helped hundreds of others with her services.\
“I love coming into work and seeing the children who have become like my own over the years,” Traina says. Along with a staff of eight speech therapists and two occupational therapists in two offices, she takes pride in the fact that her business is family friendly. “We have found that the children make progress so much faster when we empower the parents. We teach them the strategies that they need to know to help their child communicate,” she says.
Free parent classes are offered on Fridays. August 15–19 is a summer camp that includes swimming and field trips.

“Wow! How beautiful and different the salon looks!” That’s what Kristina Norris, new manager of Kids Hair Salon, keeps hearing from her customers.
