Outdoor Education FoundationFoundation Works to Maintain Outdoor Education Programs

Sixth grade camp and outdoor education programs of the San Diego County Office of Education have helped children learn hands-on science, achieve personal growth and explore community service and environmental stewardship since 1946. Formed in 2005, the Outdoor Education Foundation helps ensure that all students have the chance to participate in these programs. The dedicated teachers and educators who created the group knew that nature education had a positive, long-lasting impact on children both inside and outside of the classroom. They were deeply aware of the financial challenges facing schools, families and valuable outdoor education programs. The foundation provides resources, including student and school scholarships, in support of sixth grade camp and class-room programs like The Green Machine, Splash Science Lab and Marine Science Lab. Sustained through donations and sponsorships, the foundation welcomes public participation and offers special events and fundraisers like the annual Sustainable Feast at the Little Italy Farmer’s Market and the Camp Cuyamaca Campout on June 4. Enjoy free, monthly “Twilight Awakenings” hikes at trails around the county.

Jewish Family ServicesChild Development Assessments and Resources for Parents

“Is my child’s behavior typical? Is my child’s development on course? Can I do more to help my child? These are just some of the questions our counseling department routinely heard from concerned parents,” says Michael Stern, director of marketing for Jewish Family Service of San Diego. Its child assessment services test and identify developmental delays in infants, children and adolescents. The program is open to the entire San Diego community.

Developmental delays affect millions of children. Untreated disorders can interfere with school performance and affect their ability to build successful lives as adults.

Overseeing assessments is Dr. Bonny Forrest, J.D., Ph.D., a pediatric neuropsychologist who also developed Project SKIP (Screening Kids for Intervention and Prevention), an online program that helps screen for delays in childhood, including autism.

Assessments include developmental, relational, neuropsychological, psychological and educational.

Stern encourages parents to contact Jewish Family Services for an appointment. “Coupled with our well-respected counseling services for the entire family including individual, couples, child and family therapy, our child assessment services can offer a family a wealth of support.”

Cheer San DiegoFitness Skills and Teamwork Highlighted at Cheer Gym

“Cheerleading is not only an amazing, hard sport, but it’s a great way for teenagers and kids to escape from daily life issues,” says Cheer San Diego co-owner Betty Shabat. “CheerSD was created in 2009 when Megan Eacret and I decided to follow our passion of creating an all-star cheerleading program.”

Tapping into their combined experiences as cheerleaders and coaches the women have put together a gym and fitness center that offers competitive cheer and dance teams, and classes in tumbling, pilates, yoga and crossfit.

“Coach Megan and I work hard to make sure your children are learning teamwork, new skills, and practicing safety when cheering,” Shabat says. “We are a big family. We try to offer events for parents as well as our athletes.” The on-site fitness studio lets parents take classes while their children are practicing. Cheer San Diego also hosts birthday parties and a monthly Parents’ Night Out.

“We offer Open Gym on Saturday [mornings] from 10-12, for kids who want to practice skills, or play in the gym,” Shabat says. “All summer long, we will have different camps, clinics, and cheerleading tryouts for new members to come join!”
