9844 Hibert St., Ste. G-1
Scripps Ranch

In an unassuming strip mall in Scripps Ranch is a “contemporary casual” eatery called Stone Flats. Flatbread pizzas baked in hot stone ovens are the specialty. My husband and daughters Macy, 13, and Naomi, 9, recently stopped in for an enjoyable lunch. Ample outdoor seating makes Stone Flats a perfect summertime destination.

We ordered at the counter and sat at the huge rustic communal table, an inviting centerpiece sporting 14 large bar stools. There is no wait staff, but our food was delivered in a reasonable amount of time.

“We’re fired up about fresh!” is the Stone Flats mantra and they live up to their claim. Fresh ingredients and hormone-free meats make a healthy and refreshing change from your typical “quick” meal. They demonstrate eco-friendliness by using only recyclable paper and plastic products in their restaurant. The wood on the walls came from Wyoming snow fences!

What’s on the Menu

The menu is simple: salads, flats and soups. Regular flats ($5.50) can be “mon-dough sized” for $2 more. “Craft your own” with choice of sauce, meat, veggie and cheese or order one of six signature flats. White or wheat crust is available. Each flat is cut into small, manageable squares, easy for even the youngest foodie to enjoy. Five signature salads come in two sizes ($5.95/regular or $8.50/large). While all sound delicious, the dressings of the two we tried were a disappointment. Three soups are also on the menu: Pulled Chicken and Rice, Tomato Basil, and Three Bean Chicken Chili. Combos ($8.50 or $9.95) include two menu items and a drink. The kid’s meal ($4.50) includes a regular-sized flat (cheese, pepperoni or bacon) and a drink.

Our Favorites

Naomi ordered the Pineapple Bacon Flat and was thrilled to count seven pieces of pineapple on one small piece. Macy loved the BBQ Chicken Flat, making her reluctant to share. Being a big fan of blue cheese, my husband ordered the Steak & Blue Cheese Flat, which was surprisingly full of mushrooms, but he didn’t mind. I ordered the BLT Flat, complete with shredded lettuce and ranch drizzle. Each of us thought our flat was the best one! Our combos came with soup and salad (we had spinach and bacon, and chicken apple walnut). The Pulled Chicken and Rice Soup, full of chicken and vegetables, was hands-down the family favorite side dish.

Sweet Ending

Eager to indulge in dessert, we ordered two Cinna-Flats a La Mode ($3.50 each). Thin, crisp crust was topped with thinly sliced tart green apples, cinnamon sugar and vanilla ice cream. The aroma of freshly baked apple pie had our mouths watering. I’m ashamed to say that these were devoured in six minutes … flat.

When you want a unique, palate-pleasing, informal meal try Stone Flats. You’ll appreciate its reasonable prices, healthy food and comfortable setting.

Macy says, “It’s different from the typical stop-in-and-get-a-hamburger kind of place.”
