Not just a simple dessert for kids’ birthday parties anymore, cupcakes have gone gourmet. Now North County has its own specialty cupcake bakery in Solana Beach on Highway 101. Owner Ilene Lamb discovered her first cupcake bakery while on vacation. She had an itch for more cupcakes when she returned, but couldn’t find anything similar in San Diego, so she decided to open her own shop, as she is seriously passionate about these mini cakes. Cupcake Love opened in November of 2008 and has been satisfying sweet tooths ever since.
Cupcake Love has 10 flavors available every day, plus two more that change weekly. The flavor calendar is listed on their Website. Full-size cupcakes are $3 each, and mini Love Bites are $1.75. My daughter Carina and I went there recently to pick out a selection of cupcakes for our family, and I thought I’d let her give you her impression.
“Driving in to the Beachwalk Shopping Center, you can hardly miss the bright sign and sparkly pink counter. Unable to decide what cupcakes to buy, my mom and I chose one of each flavor—a dozen. Some of my favorites were German Chocolate Love Story, Chocolate Peanut Butter Ecstasy, Gingerbread Man, and Tiramisu Amore. Along with those flavors we also got Chocolate Loves Vanilla, Vanilla Really Loves Chocolate, The Party Girl, Candy Cane Bliss, Coconut Snowball, Chocolate Sin, Red Velvet, and Vanilla Bliss. They are all as good as they sound.
Every month, Cupcake Love offers a new selection of cupcakes. Some stay the whole month, where others stay for only a week, so if you hear about a great cupcake, hurry up and get it! Along with their regular cupcakes they also offer mini cupcakes in the same flavors. If you have a smaller family I would recommend getting those, or fewer cupcakes, because they don’t keep too long. However, they’re so delicious they wouldn’t last long anywhere.”
Like Carina, I, too, loved the German Chocolate Love story, devil’s food cake topped with chocolate ganache and a coconutty German chocolate icing. The Peanut Butter Ecstasy was also amazing, a chocolate cake topped with flavorful peanut butter icing. Each cupcake looks like a mini work of art, with the icing colored and layered to match the season and topped with sprinkles, edible glitter or a chocolate decoration. Cupcake Love can also do special orders for birthdays, showers, weddings or other occasions, and rents cupcake stands and plates. Even if you just take your cupcakes in a box, one nice touch is that the boxes have custom-made holders so they don’t slide around on their way to your destination.
If you plan on buying more than two dozen cupcakes, please call in advance to make sure the flavors you want will be available.
